It sort of slows the pace down, but it’s far better than everything going to hell and you losing a lot more progress. Yes, there are auto-save checkpoints, but given how elaborate some of these combat encounters are, it doesn’t hurt to save each time you kill or knock out a guard, unless you’re in the middle of open combat or a split-second from detection.
